FY11 Recent Achievements and Highlights
During the last year, WFA’s grantee partners have made key inroads on preserving past gains and advancing new opportunity for women and girls.
ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY
- Passed paid sick and safe days legislation in Seattle.
- Secured federal start-up funds for family leave insurance programs.
- Increased the economic self-sufficiency of women through business development training, financial services, and loan support.
HEATH & WELL-BEING
- Documented women’s perspectives on healthcare to inform and influence reform efforts.
- Improved the health of underserved women of color through culturally-appropriate breast health education and screening.
- Provided homeless women with access to basic hygiene and nutritional resources.
- Increased access to resources and treatment options for LBTQ women who have used methamphetamine.
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
- Developed the leadership of court-involved girls through arts-based programming and service learning projects.
- Trained low-income mothers to advocate for the removal of barriers to participate in programs like WorkFirst and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.
- Increased the empowerment and civic participation of Latina women through community organizing and advocacy efforts focused on economic justice issues.
SAFETY
- Launched the first local, comprehensive, residential facility focused on the recovery of juvenile victims of commercial sexual exploitation.
- Secured additional flexibility in WorkFirst and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families programs so violence survivors can focus on helping their children recover from abuse.
- Preserved over $1.5 million in funds designated for delivery of services to survivors of violence.
